Asphalt is only the top layer of a paving project. If the ground under it is soft, poorly graded or holds water, the pavement will crack, sink and break up no matter how well it was laid. Athens Asphalt Paving provides grading and site preparation for projects where the ground needs to be shaped, drained, built up or compacted before paving, whether that is a new driveway, a parking lot or a rural access road.
We look at slope, drainage, access, existing material and the planned pavement together, and we plan the preparation as the foundation of the project rather than an afterthought. In many cases grading and paving are part of the same job, which keeps the schedule tighter and the responsibility in one place.

We shape the site to the elevations and slopes the finished surface needs, so water runs where it should and the pavement sits on a uniform plane.
Ditches, swales, crowns and culvert areas are planned around how water actually moves across the property, especially during heavy East Texas rain.
The base material under the pavement is built up and compacted to give the asphalt a stable foundation that resists settling.
Old gravel, failed asphalt, soft soil and damaged areas are removed, reworked or reinforced before new work begins.
